Caliph's Cone

Display the Caliph's Cone and a small crocheted ball. The cone is shown empty and placed mouth down on the table. The ball is shown at your fingertips. In an instant of magic, the ball disappears. When the cone is lifted, the ball is underneath. Offer to repeat the effect. Once again, the empty cone is placed mouth down on the table. Again, the ball vanishes from your fingertips and reappears under the cone. One more time. This time, you place the ball in your mouth and apparently swallow it. Again, it reappears under the cone. Again. Place the ball in your pocket. This time, when you lift the cone, there is a large solid rubber ball underneath. What a finish.

My single reason for purchasing Caliph's Cone awhile back, is the beauty of the cone itself. It is just a gorgeous prop, and very magical looking. The routine that comes with the effect is standard so far as moves, effects, and finale. Given the wealth of chop cup routines on the market, there's much more that a performer can do beyond the included Viking routine. Most cups and ball, and chop cup sets come with a draw string pouch. Caliph's Cone does not, and a prop this pretty deserves to be introduced from a velvet or other type of cloth bag.
I also prefer to include an ungaffed ball in my routines, which is not included with Caliph's Cone, but is easy enough to obtain. I do cups and balls/chop cup with my own standard cups-and also with a jigger, small cocktail shakers, and balled up bills. As I perform in bars, it helps to be able to use props that are already there behind the bar. I vary my jigger routine with crocheted balls and a PK ring. Caliph's Cone is clearly not some standard prop that's just sitting around on a bar shelf. It advertises itself visually, as a special magician's prop, but, was too pretty for me to pass up! To me it evokes something ancient because of its shape; Caliph's Cone seems to be the cousin of the leather cone, ball, and silk, a favorite of Dai Vernon's and many others. Overall, this effect isn't breaking any new ground, but the cone itself departs from the widely known chop cup or jigger variation. High quality Viking craftsmanship — just have a bag made or purchase one, if you get Caliph's Cone.
