I'm convinced the Stripper Deck is one of the most under-utilized props in all of magcidom. If you're like all the other magicians I meet, it was one of the first “tricks” you bought. Then you got older and “wiser” and decided it was just for kids. I know I followed this path.
If you're lucky like me, you've been fooled (badly) by a professional using a Stripper Deck. Kid's play, my ass.
But I'm not reviewing the Stripper Deck. You can buy one of those at any magic shop. What you want to know is whether this DVD is worth the extra $30.
First of all, the quality of the DVD is excellent. This is typical of the publisher, Big Blind Media.
The DVD starts with “What not to do.” This is a great idea. The subject dealt with in a humorous manner, but there's no question that the producers want you to take this topic very seriously. The running theme of this DVD is that everything should look natural. This should be obvious, but it never hurts to pound these ideas into the thick skulls that may not get them naturally.
The rest of the DVD chapters alternate between teaching a series of moves (cuts, shuffles, spreads, etc.) followed by an effect that utilizes the moves taught.
Most of the effects are of the “find the card(s)” variety. While they certainly display the use of the moves taught, I found them completely uninspiring. Using the stripper deck to find cards seems so superficial. One of them even focuses on the idea of using finger sensitivity to find cards. On one level, it's fun to do exactly what you say, but I was looking for something less obvious from this DVD.
The effects in the later chapters were more interesting to me. If you want to do a sandwich effect, you can't get much cleaner than Sandwich This. Programmed Deck was really interesting, as well.
Here's the bottom line for me. If you want to expand your options with a pack of cards, get this and learn all of Jon's methods. Then start integrated them into your routines. Buy this for the raw knowledge, not the effects.
