LUCKY STRINGS

A baffling game they simply can't win!

Five strings extend from an envelope, but only one string is attached to the winning bell at the bottom. Allow your spectator to choose four of the strings, and the final string remains for you. Pull each of the selected strings upward, and show that they are all loose strings - none of them are attached to the winning bell. The single string they left for you is the winner! Every selection is freely made by the spectator. Even if they decide to change strings midway, they still cannot find the winning string.

Everyone is fascinated by the concept of destiny, and that is clearly the theme of this baffling magic trick!

Overview

Bank Night in Japanese is Ginko Yoru, and Tenyo’s Lucky Strings is a Bank Night routine with an Asian Flair. In the 1930’s a fellow named Tom Sellers created the Bank Night routine called Just Chance. Since then there have been dozens of versions released each with their own little twist. The original and standard routine is that the performer offers four individuals the chance to win something valuable (typically money). There are five envelopes and each person gets to choose one, which leaves the last for the performer. In many versions, the participants get to either keep their initial choice or switch with other participants or the performer. The typical ending is the performer gets to keep the prize. Various versions have been developed to either lessen the disappointment of losing through comedy or the participants walk away with smaller prizes rather than nothing.

Effect

Lucky Strings is a Bank Night routine, but unlike the traditional Bank Night routine which uses separate envelopes, strings are pulled from a cardboard sleeve instead. As written in the instructions, the routine is played for a single participant and instead of the participant feeling foolish in the end, they are told they will be given temporary magic powers to pick the winning string. They winning string is the longest string with a bell attached to it. They are asked to choose one and they do. Instead of pulling out the winner first, the performer proves the one they chose is the winner by pulling out the four others which are all short. They last string pulled from the sleeve is the longest with the bell.

Method

The method utilizes a very clever setup which will allow the performer to make any string the participant chooses the correct string. Coupling an interesting mechanism with a simple optical illusion, the participant actually sees their string as the winning string.

Product Quality

Like all Tenyo products, Lucky Strings looks like a child’s toy. It does not come ready to perform and a little assembly is required. The components provided look like they are decent quality and would withstand long term use. The instructions provided are in Japanese and you would have to go online and download them if you want them in English. The instructions are a touch over 4 pages long and covers the assembly of the gimmick and three routines depending on your personality. The gimmick work flawlessly as long as you handle the sleeve properly. There is no sleight of hand but a little practice is all that is needed to properly activate the gimmick.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is accurate and displays the most basic routine. Many magicians have a love / hate relationship with Tenyo because they are so gosh darn clever but looks like a child’s toy. With a little creativity a talented magician could really make this product look phenomenal.
