Second Chance is a Wayne Dobson/Alakazam Magic production and it is great. It was previously released by the genius creator, Wayne Dobson, as a pamphlet and in another writing, but was released by Alakazam on DVD in 2013.

In Second Chance, you tell the spectator you are going to do a trick, but if you get it wrong, you will need a second chance. They agree to this condition. The performer takes out 2 decks of cards and the spectator thinks of a card, cuts to it and takes it out of the deck. Once the thought of card is removed from the deck, the entire deck, minus the chosen thought of card, is placed back in the card box. Then the performer takes out the second deck, shows that all the cards are different and claims to be able to pick a single card from the deck and it will match the chosen card. The performer lays a card down and when the spectator shows her card, it does NOT match. Ouch! But wait, there was always the option for a second chance. Then the wrong card that the performer chose is flipped over and written on its back in permanent marker is the name of the spectator’s card.

You are provided with one of the decks and the simple gimmick. The second deck of cards you must provide for yourself. There is a one-time set-up that takes about 10 to 15 minutes which is easy. To perform this trick, there is the need to use a stack, but it need not be committed to memory, unless it is shuffled or dropped. One deck needs the stack and the other can be completely shuffled.

The trick is very easy to learn and perform and it provides a punch you in the face ending after an apparent misstep by the performer. The reset takes a split second and can happen in front of the spectators. There are various different routines you can do with this deck and it can be repeated for the same audience with a different result every time. It is a good trick for table hopping and does not necessarily need a table if you can use your spectator’s hands. There is a small amount of audience management necessary to make sure that the almost invisible gimmick is not seen. You can do this trick completely surrounded and there is no force whatsoever. It is truly a free choice.

The promotional video is accurate and so is the ad copy, but it glosses over the part where you need some slight audience management. Remember, you will need the spectators to hold the deck and cut it, maybe several times, but not shuffle it.

The 23 minute DVD starts with a quick and to the point studio demonstration by Michael Sullivan to Peter Nardi. The entire routine takes less than two minutes. Peter and Michael teach how to do the one time set-up and discuss with clarity the routine, various aspects of it, and Nardi’s alternate patter.

Manufacturer's Description:

Wayne Dobson has a knack for invention knockout effects with great presentations, that are easy to do and Second Chance is one of his finest creations!

Without you even touching the deck, a spectator thinks of any card, removes it from the deck and hides it in their pocket. You then take another deck and claim that you are going to try and choose the same card that the spectator has hidden in their pocket. You remove one card and the spectator removes the card from their pocket, however it is NOT the same card. You ask for a Second Chance to prove that you have chosen the same card.

Turning over your card it is seen that the spectators 'Thought of Card' is written on the back, proving that it is the Same Card!
