Overview

Rainbow Connection by Mathieu Bich is flexible enough to be a quick, one off magic trick, an intro to a more formal card set or an interim trick between a couple of longer sets. The versatility of the trick does not stop there. There a four handlings from the most basic non-sleight version to advanced. Each handling has its own “flavor” and can engage the spectators on different levels.

Effect

The performer clearly shows four red cards front and back and changes them to four blue cards front and back. He challenges the spectators to guess how the trick is done. After they all shout out their answers, the performer then changes one of the cards to another color in full view. Afterwards, all four cards are shown again but the backs are all different colors and the fronts are all aces. This is just one version of Rainbow Connection that can be performed.

Method

The method relies primarily on gimmicked cards and a bit of something that will keep the packet “intact” until the magic needs to happen. The handling of Rainbow Connection ranges from the non-sleight beginner handling to advanced handling. Naturally with all card tricks the proper sequence of moves are required to make this work. Although, not difficult to learn, practice of course is necessary so the moves are seamless and fluid.

Product Quality

The cards are printed on Bicycle stock by the US Playing Card Company so there are no quality issues there. The DVD covers all the handlings and there are four to learn if so desired. The DVD is of average quality and the instructional is a bit dry. Even though English is not his first language it would have been more watchable if there was a bit more enthusiasm. There are no live performances either which would have been nice even if they were dubbed in English.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is accurate (perhaps with a bit of hyperbole). To assume that a card trick would bring the audience “into an appropriate state to watch magic” is making a big assumption. Although the pitch might be a stretch, this is a solid routine to initiate an interaction with the spectators.

I was on the fence about this product when I first saw the trailer for it when it was released. The reason for that is because it basically exposes a certain (common?) card that magicians use which is actually a very powerful tool when used correctly.

After watching the DVD though and thinking about it, if you script the piece right it should not be an issue. I do like the idea that Mathieu uses about presenting it as a game, but it is not a game of chance so there is no "sting" if you will. The only problem I had with this other than that was in some of the performances, he 'over-handles' the cards sometimes - it is not necessary to do it in reality and he does not tell you to that, it is just my observation and something that drove me nuts.

That said there are no live performances on the DVD but Mathieu does teach four different handlings, each one progressively more "difficult" than the last. For each handling you will see a studio performance and then the explanation. In reality, none of them are hard to do and in my opinion, the Classic handling and the Advanced handling are better from a presentation standpoint.

The production quality is fantastic and whether you watch the English or the French version of the DVD, the video, lighting and sound are fantastic, Mathieu does a superb job of teaching everything clearly, including giving tips here and there for each handling. The DVD runs a total of 35 minutes and just about 33 of those minutes are actual instruction. There is a bonus section which consists of three trailers for other products and one bonus effect that is performed and explained - very cool effect!

At the end you are left quite clean but not 100% examinable. You 'could' end up that way if you happen to have a card that matches the one that is not examinable at the end and switching it out, but in my opinion it would not be worth the trouble. Mathieu says (and I agree) that if you perform this with the right script and presentation, nobody will really ask to examine the cards anyway.

The ad copy is 100% accurate - I am not sure if I agree with it being the 'ultimate opener' but I will say that it is very magical and would make for a great opener. For a short 30 second routine, it packs a lot of magic. Write your own script to justify the cards and you will have a very nice little packet effect.

Highly recommended!
