Overview

I was super excited to perform Slide, but unfortunately I was also super disappointed in what I received because I just couldn't get the arts and crafts down in a way that looked as good as it does in the promotional video.

Maybe some others will have better luck but after ripping up a few cards, I just gave up. A big loser for me! I do note that you can find superb reviews of this product all over the web. It just didn't work for me and my sadness at knowing that I will never perform Slide exceeds my disappointment in the product.

I gave this as low a rating as available because it is worthless in my hands. But, don't forget that one man's garbage is another's treasure.

When I was trying to perform this trick to myself, the card did not slide easily, looked a bit off and frequently flipped over.

There is some arts and crafts required to make the cards do what they need to do and I just could not get the precise dimensions correct when trying to construct the card gimmick. I was super disappointed that the mis-made card was not pre-made into an out-of-the-box gimmick because I ruined a few of the 12 mis-made cards in trying to make the gimmick. Rats!!

Make up your own mind on this one.

Effect

The effect is super cool. You tear a playing card and place it back together off center and then watch as it slides back into place, only to be handed out an instant later. This trick can be performed with playing cards, money, matchbooks or business cards. The video of the performance looks amazing - unfortunately, I couldn't duplicate the incredibleness!

Method

There is a custom made gimmick that permits you to "slide" and "attach" and "restore". I have never seen a gimmick like this and I just can't tell you more. You may have to ditch something as well.... not too much of a hint for a TNR trick!

Product Quality

The gimmick is well made except that one part of it kept coming loose and requiring me to reattach a certain part. I could have glued it back together, but didn't because I couldn't get this just right.

The instructional video was 41 minutes and set to looping music that became very annoying. There was no spoken work in the explanation and the instructions were performed on poor quality video with subtitles. The effects were over-taught and the video probably could have been less then 30 minutes. Despite the amazingness of the effect (as seen in the promo video) I was getting very bored watching the too long sub-titled video because there were unnecessary instruction such as "Open the wallet" when you need to get the gimmick out of your wallet before performing the trick.

I also found the price to be a bit expensive for what you get.

Ad Copy Integrity

I found the ad-copy to be completely accurate. It follows below:

A signed card can be openly torn in half or already torn.

You make one half magically cling to the other.
The torn half comes to life and visibly slides across to restore itself!
The restored card is handed out for the spectator to keep.

NO THREADS OR ELASTICS

Includes Easy No-Palm handlings. Slide a signed Playing Card, Business Card, Matchbook or Paper Money. Resets in seconds.

BONUS Mis-Made Card
Restore the signed card into a Mis-Made impossible object...then give it away as a souvenir!

Includes the precision Mark Allen engineered SLIDE GIMMICK, DVD and 12 Mis-Made Kings.

Final Thoughts

I was super disappointed but many others may love this trick. It has been many years since it was released and I have not seen it being performed so maybe that means something.

When I first saw the video promo for Slide, I was skeptical as it looked too good to be true and co-creator, Titanas, has a less than stellar track record here at My Lovely Assistant. Check out earlier product reviews by David Parr and Gordon Meyer for more detail.

I was surprised and very pleased with Slide. It's a visual restoration of a torn playing card that is very magical. Having performed it for a few different audiences, Slide gets a great reaction. The effect was inspired by Jim Steinmeyer's illusion Modern Art.

The package contains an instructional DVD in the style of Harris's True Astonishments disks - explanations shown to music with sub-titles. I have struggled with this format as I have found that there are important elements that are being overlooked or not clearly explained. I am not sure why as they have a whole DVD to use. You also receive twelve specially printed cards for one of the Slide versions and most importantly, a well made and very ingenious gimmick.

Co-creator, De'Mon, performs and explains Slide with playing cards, money, a match book and a business card. For me, the signed playing card and match book are the most magical - although the match book restoration does have some clean up issues. If the gimmick attachment method should wear out, a trip to your office supply will solve that quickly.

In performance you need to watch your angles as it cannot be performed surrounded. The sides are a little vulnerable but this is not insurmountable with thought and care.

Slide is well suited for the more advanced beginner to intermediate magician. It's magical, fun to perform and gets a great reaction. What else would you ask for in an effect?

For $55 bucks you get a super simple to use and clever gimmick, 12 "special" cards and a very bizarre, visual easy to use effect.

Though $55 seems a little steep for a one trick pony, keep in mind that you're getting a very cool gimmick and some extra cards. The ad copy is 100% accurate. They video trailer is totally honest and the effect is super visual.

The DVD is easy to learn from, well produced and in depth. You get everything you need to perform the effect. The cool thing is that you can use the gimmick on your business cards instead of playing cards. The only catch is that you have to choose which one you're going to do. The gimmick is relatively permanent once you've applied it.

Other than that, if you like what you see in the trailer, you'll be extremely happy with your purchase. Many of the visual animations that are all the rage these days require complicated thread work or crazy magnet contraptions Enlightenment that just don't work properly or a too messy and/or convoluted to use. This however is very practical, very easy, and very clever.

Final Verdict:
4.5 Stars with a Stone Status of GEM.
