Gaetan Bloom is one of my personal heroes. He has such a fresh, creative approach to his magic… and he's insanely entertaining, a rare combination.

What you've got here is a DVD conversion of three tapes originally produced in 1996 with Dominique Duvivier. The format is somewhat odd (like Gaetan?) but totally works. The originals were in French. Instead of doing a professional and exact translation, Gaetan just speaks over the French. It's part translation, part paraphrasing and a lot of funny asides.

I fell in love with Gaetan's work when I found his Standing Card in an old set of lecture notes. Well, the idea is expanded into one entire segment of the first DVD, entitled "Indirect Threads." The idea is to use invisible thread, but not for floating or movement. Gaetan uses threads for mentalism and standard close-up routines like "Buttons Thru the Table."

The second section is all on the thumb tip. You've got one, right? Watch Gaetan and be enlightened. Who would have thought there could be that much additional work on a prop that we've all used and probably tossed in the drawer long ago?

The final DVD is simply titled "General Magic." It includes, amongst other things, a mentalism trick with a giant die trapped inside a Tupperware bowl, a card to impossible location (inside a Polaroid photo) and Gaetan's famous "Chinese Sticks" done with bicycle pumps.

The two DVDs contain over four hours of material. All of it is fresh, creative and well-thought-out. In fact, I'll be very surprised if you're not fooled by almost every routine. And these aren't just bits or ideas, like so many DVDs on the market these days. They are fully-developed routines that you could drop into your show as-is.

I can't wait to see what's next for this master of our art.
