Lee Alex presents us with five costumes for a male performer: a bathrobe, tuxedo, Hawaiian shirt & shorts, shirt and pants and a suit with tie. The first four can be layered into a continuous sequence of changes. The final change, from a casual shorts-and-shirt to expensive-looking pants and long-sleeved shirt is quite striking!
Since I'm terrified of fabric, I brought in an expert to help me review this DVD: my wife, who happens to be an excellent seamstress.
My first question was simply: how hard would it be for a magician to create these costumes? Jen says that an expert costumer could probably engineer the costumes based on the video footage presented. However, there are no patterns, measurements or sewing details included on the DVD.
Luckily, you're not creating costumes from scratch. In most cases, you can begin with existing clothes and alter them by cutting and sewing in the gimmicks. Alex does provide suggestions for selecting clothing of the right size and fabric.
Many of the costumes rely on a proprietary gimmick which can be purchased directly from Alex. Additional pieces can be found at a sewing store or haberdashery.
While the costumes are viewable from all angles (save for the Hawaiian shirt), some hang oddly and/or have "problem areas" that will not be seen on stage but could be tricky if you're performing close to your audience.
The DVD mentions a bonus section covering "The real secrets of the Color Change Vest." It should be noted that Alex only covers the use of the vests, not the construction. So this section will only be useful to people who have already purchased one of Alex's vests.
Bottom line: if you want to add some quick-changes to your act, Alex is the go-to guy and I think buying this DVD would obviously be your first step.
