When you get asked how you became interested in magic, you might consider answering by "showing rather than telling" and by using an effect such as Heirloom.

Initially released in 2003 by Alakazam Magic, Heirloom is a creation of Jamie Badman and Colin Miller, based on Kenton Knepper's Kolossal Killer principle. The performer removes his wallet and places it on the table. He states he received an heirloom which he will show later. He tells the story of how his Uncle Charlie once played a high-stakes poker game in which he gambled his and his wife, Emily's, entire fortune on one lucky card. The performer asks the participant to put himself in the position of Uncle Charlie and to name the lucky playing card that would give him a winning hand, excluding the Joker and the Aces, which would be too obvious. The participant names the card and the performer removes from his wallet the beloved heirloom -- a photograph of Uncle Charlie and Emily holding the very card the participant named. Finally, the performer shows that his wallet does not contain any other heirloom photographs.

The high-quality DVD comes with PDF files, clear instructions and includes well-made props, except for the Heirloom Wallet, which is sold separately and came after the Heirloom effect. The wallet was designed by Tony Curtis, based on his Sho-gun Wallet. It is not required to perform the effect; Peter Nardi explains a method for using a normal wallet. Also discussed are ways of aging the props to make them look more authentic.

One drawback is that the card must be named before the photograph is removed from the wallet; but the effect easily lends itself to walk-around and restaurant work, and, for the Bizzarist, Heirloom offers many presentational possibilities, indeed. No sleight-of-hand is involved, although one must be vigilant when showing the wallet. Frankly, I would not offer to show the wallet unless requested; as the wise magician once said, "Why run when no one is chasing you?"

The publisher has also released the Heirloom Bonus DVD Pack, which features uses for ESP cards, word forces, number forces and ideas for use with Bob Cassidy's Chronologue and John Kennedy's Mind Power Deck.
