Effect

You place a jumbo card face down on a chair without revealing it's identity.

A participant is invited to sit down on the mystery card and is shown a deck of shuffled playing cards. You explain that they will use their subconscious to deduce the identity of the jumbo card they are sitting on. The spectator cuts the deck into two piles and places them in either hand. They are asked to toss one half away and keep the other. After they do this they cut the remaining cards into two piles, holding one in each hand and they once again toss one pile away and keep the other. Down to the last few cards, the participant chooses one card, having the opportunity to change their mind several times. They make a final selection. With their final choice in hand the spectator stands and picks up the jumbo card, to find it matches their selection EXACTLY!

I've become a bit Bill Abbott fan over the past year or so. He's got a real knack for creating great routines... and the methods are always solid and well-researched.

Smart-Ass is no different. I'll list just a few things I like about it.

First of all, the effect is simple. Simple to do and simple to explain, which is key for memorability. Someone sits on an unseen jumbo card. They then choose a card from a regular deck in the fairest manner possible. The two cards match.

Second, this trick creates “big pictures” (a phrase I hear often from Jeff McBride at our Master Classes in Vegas). First you've got someone from the audience sitting on a chair. Add a jumbo card. Finally, the biggest picture of all is your assistant tossing cards in the air to eliminate cards. It packs small and plays big.

Finally, the method is applicable to any routine that requires a card to be forced. The method is easily worth the $60 this item will set you back.

The only thing I don't like about Smart-Ass is that Bill has released it to the public.
