Only Slightly Sleighty

Schlutz, Ryan

Big Blind Media

(Based on 1 review)
Ryan Schlutz is known as a genius creator of easy to do card tricks. His bestselling DVD's 'Miracles Without Moves' and 'Effortless Effects' have armed countless magicians with material that has blown spectators away but required no sleight of hand skill to perform.

On Only Slightly Sleighty Ryan unleashes seven brand new barnstorming card routines that take everything to the next level. Most of the routines are still sleight-free or super easy (and those that aren't are still easily achievable by magicians of any skill level), but Ryan also teaches extra options for those who want to incorporate some sleights into the equation and add extra layers of deception to the material. Everything is taught on the DVD, so you can start simple and then build your way to card ninja expert!

The focus of the tricks on Only Slightly Sleighty is giving your audience the feeling that THEY have control of everything. Ryan has honed and refined these routines with the implicit target of making the audience feel like they have made every decision. Because if THEY made decisions, then the tricks truly ARE magic! It's a masterclass in audience control and relaxed misdirection. You'll have a lot of fun performing these routines, and you WILL fool people!

Overview

There are some creators that are easy to watch as well as easy to read what they write. There are some that are easy to watch and difficult to read what they write, and conversely there are some creators difficult to watch and easy to read what they write. Easy right? I’m sure Ryan Schlutz is a clever performer and creator but I couldn’t sit through Only Slightly Sleighty. On this DVD Ryan Schlutz performs and explains tricks as he does them for his spectators. Unfortunately, I found his “style” so difficult to watch I couldn’t sit through the entire DVD. His constant “verbal toying” with the spectator created so much confusion I couldn’t follow along. What is worse is the way he explains them as well. As Eugene Burger once said “confusion is not magic”.

Effect

In this DVD there are seven “easy to do” card tricks. The premise for the seven tricks are designed to make the audience feel they are in control and there is a “laissez faire” attitude by the performer. Basically, everything that happens is due to and designed by the spectator.

Method

The primary methodologies are through the use of setup stacks, key cards or marked cards (pencil dot). There is a lot of shuffling procedures which is supposed to create the sense of randomness.

Product Quality

As far as production qualities go, Big Blind Media does an incredible job with the photography, lighting, sound and sets. The big disappointment is in the performances and explanations. As I mentioned before, I’m sure Schlutz is entertaining as a performer but when marketing a magic DVD, the product has to be clearly understood, easy to follow and untainted with unnecessary verbiage. In the performances and the explanations, Schlutz speaks way to fast and slurs every other word. He also has excessive wording, toys around too much and gives too many options in one explanation. He shows you a way to do something and then says, or you can do it this, this way, this way, this way or this way. Too much info to take in. Another major flaw in the production part of the DVD is the explanations have procedures that are not explained until later on in the DVD and its “up to you to find it”? I’d rather not.

Ad Copy Integrity

If all was delivered as stated it would be a decent DVD but I found that although the tricks “may be easy”, the DVD is too convoluted to follow.

Final Thoughts

I could not watch more than ½ hour without my head spinning. Perhaps Schlutz’s written works would be easier to digest since you can read them at your own pace.
