Fight Dirty by Andy Nyman
I have been a fan of Andy Nyman for a while. Many of you will know him as a major consultant to Derren Brown. Andy Nyman is a thinker.
As I went through these lecture notes there were things I enjoy and things I hated. One routine in particular stands out as an example of how I felt about the whole booklet. I don’t want to give away the name of the particular effect in this review; however, the premise is outstanding, really outstanding. The method is “an accomplice”. Most people will not be able to use an accomplice and when there are only 6 tricks in this booklet, I don’t feel this is useful. My problem with this type of method is that most tricks can be greatly enhanced and made into a real fooler if you use an accomplice. So using an accomplice is the easy answer. I felt a bit let down by this trick.
“Chair swindle” is another interesting premise that I have seen used in one way or another over the years. If you have been involved in mentalism for more than a couple of years you will already be familiar with multiple ways to accomplish this feat. Although the premise is intriguing, his answer was only OK.
“Kick in the head” is a relatively simple card trick, cute, simple, and to the point. I think this trick would have been greatly enhanced had the premise and story been more developed. Currently it sits as a pick a card trick and this is how I knew you would pick this card.
Also included is a very interesting and entertaining story about how Andy averted almost assured disaster at a show and was somehow “and he tells you how” able to save the day. It is an enjoyable story and it will surprise you how he gets out of a really tight jam.
There are a couple more tricks in the booklet but I just don’t see worth $20. Comparatively there is so much more out there that you can spend a twenty dollar bill on that would get you more meaty material.
