Overview

The Deluxe Chop Cup from Bazar De Magia hails form a long and venerated past. The origins of the Chop Cup dates back to 1723. It was popularized in the 1950’s by Al Wheatley who performed under the name Chop Cup. Don Alan made it a staple in his act and performed his routine on the Ed Sullivan Show. Since then numerous versions of the Chop Cup has been created taking on different forms and shapes. The Deluxe Chop Cup by Bazar De Magia is shaped in the traditional manner to accommodate a much larger load for the end.

Effect

A performer takes out a small cup and ball and places the ball in the cup and places the cup mouth down on the pad. The cup is lifted up and the ball disappeared. The ball is now in the performer’s hand. This happens several times in different ways to the amazement of the spectators. Ultimately, the magician places the ball in the cup and asks where it is. Some will say the cup and some will say the hand. Whatever they choose the cup is lifted and there is a lemon or some other items that size.

Method

The method behind all Chop Cups is that the cup and ball is gimmicked. There is also another regular ball in play. Aside from the props, there must be well practiced moves that camouflage the exchange of balls and final load. A well done Chop Cup routine can be just as effective as a cups and balls routine which uses three cups.

Product Quality

The product is made out of aluminum so it is lightweight. It doesn’t have the heft of a heavier cup but at the price point that it is, it is worth trying if you were considering a Chop Cup routine. The advantage of this inexpensive cup is obviously, first it doesn’t require a big investment to start to learn a routine. The moves are the same no matter which cup you use. If an inexpensive cup gets damaged by an accidental drop, it isn’t so much of a tragedy. You can decide if this is the kind of routine you would like to learn before investing in a “quality” cup. The magnetic attraction for this cup is perfect. It is not to light and doesn’t take an unnatural bang to dislodge the ball. The ball themselves and well made. The only negative is that the instructions are a 1.5 page PDF with the most basic directions. You would definitely have to seek out a Chop Cup routine that is more fleshed out.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is accurate. You get everything that it claims. Interestingly, it does not mention the PDF instructions. Perhaps they thought that would be a negative.
