Overview

It seems that the only place to purchase Grandpa’s Letter by The Other Brothers is on a site called Abstract Effects. And, no other words can best describe this release as the word abstract. The ad copy says very little and guess what…surprise, there is no tutorial for this. Apparently the URL that is enclosed for the tutorial is up for sale. What I can do is tell you what I think this could be, however it is pure speculation.

Effect

From the enclosed items which are an Air Mail envelope, a “handwritten” letter and a playing card which is the Ten of Spades, it appears to be a card trick in which the found card is the Ten of Spades. In addition, on cursory glance it is quite clear that there were two not so very hidden messages in the letter. By taking the first letter of the first word of each sentence, the card is revealed and by taking the last letter of each last word on every sentence was a request by “Grandpa” which is dubious at best.

Method

The method of forcing the card is also hidden because there is no access to the video. The reveal I described above.

Product Quality

The props are fairly nice. The Air Mail envelope is sturdy, the letter is printed on nice stock and the card is a card. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the training video because it is inaccessible.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is incredibly vague and even worse a bit suggestive. By making a statement the “Grandpa was kind of a perv” piques one’s curiosity. However, let me throw some water on that curiosity, the reveal is just plain stupid.

Final Thoughts

It is unfortunate that in this “digital age” downloads are the way information is transmitted but I always like the tangibility of DVDs. If the file is lost or corrupted, the website goes out of business or any other reason you cannot retrieve your video, the DVD is always there. Avoid this one at all costs, its not worth the effort.
