Ignition is a neat little trick for anyone that likes coin magic. As the Mechanic Industries website reveals, Ignition is a keychain attached to a rivet in a Mechanic Industries dollar size coin, a duplicate key chain (not attached to anything) and a duplicate Mechanic Industries coin (with no rivet). The trick comes in a small plastic bag with the password to the eight minute instructional Vimeo video which is hosted on the Mechanic Industries website.

Ignition requires basic sleight of hand, is not difficult to learn and is easy to carry around, taking up minimal pocket space. The keychain also serves a purpose, but you would need to remove your keys before doing the routines.

The keychains and coins are of the best quality which is apparent both to the touch and to visual inspection. The coins are very attractive looking and come in either antique bronze or gun metal grey. They have some weight to them and because of the high quality, the coins and keychain will last a very long time, if not for as long as you own it.

The short internet password protected video is good and demonstrates and teaches a routine which requires the performer to be wearing long sleeves, preferably a jacket with large cuffs around the wrist. The full routine results in the keychain being pulled off the coin and then reattached while allowing for inspection of the coin and key chain at certain time in the routine. The impressive part about this is that when the keychain is pulled off the coin, the rivet stays attached to the chain and the coin is missing the rivet hole. If this trick is done well, it is truly amazing. There is a shorter routine which can be performed with short sleeves and an additional routine using another classic gimmick that is not included, although I do not think that will be widely used (it also requires a jacket to be worn). The promotional video and ad copy are accurate. In fact, the Mechanic Industries gives away the secret by showing the gimmick.

Although I think that the $35 seems a bit high for what you get, Ignition is a quality product that you will have fun with and impress your spectators. For anyone that has an interest in expanding their coin routines, I recommend this product.

    REVIEW

I’m going to break this review into two segments.

First, the routine. In the online video, they demonstrate a routine using the props. The routine is pretty good. It will take a bit of practice, but it is not a knuckle buster. I would say that this is doable at an intermediate level or by any beginner with a bit of practice.

The value in this product is probably not the routine in the explanation, though the routine is nice. I would suggest that the value in this is if you were to purchase additional mechanic coins and use the Ignition routine as a small piece of a bigger coin routine, creating an entire routine that starts with taking one coin off the keychain, then perhaps the coin multiplies into several coins, and do any number of coin routines (of course, you would need to purchase additional mechanic coins and use your own methods for routines with additional coins). Perhaps the ignition routine could be the beginning and ending of a multi-coin routine.

Second, the coin itself. You get two mechanic coins to do this routine. One of the coins is attached to a chain and the other is a regular mechanic coin. If you purchased additional mechanic coins, you could use them in any variety of coin routines. The coins themselves are VERY nice. They are designed to be easy to palm and they slide across one another very quietly. One of the problems with collector coins like morgan dollars or liberty half dollars or newer circulation coins is they were not designed for magic coin manipulation. These coins were. Would an audience have any different reaction to the two different types of coins? Probably not. There are very few coin collectors so they could probably care less what type of coins you are using. With the mechanic coins, you can come up with different ways to explain their origin if that is important to your presentation. I personally use a Kinekt gear ring in my magic. The ring is not gimmicked in any way, it is just a ring that audience members find very interesting. The ring and the mechanic coins make a good combination.

    CAUTION

The coins are excellent quality and the instruction is good. The only potential downside is if you want to use mechanic coins in other routines instead of your current coins, and you use gimmicked coins, I don’t know if anyone is making gimmicked coins for the mechanic coins.

    VERDICT

    Nice instruction, very nice coins.

Random I-Tunes Song of The Moment: I Want Action by Poison

Review of Ignition by Mechanic Industries:

Two Mechanic Industries coins, two key chains, one 8 minute streaming video and $35 bucks. Is it gem or is it rubble? Stay tuned to find out.

    Effect

The basic effect is that you magically link and unlink the key chain from your key ring. The key chain is basically a coin with a hole drilled through it. You cause the hole to vanish from the coin as you magically remove the chain from the coin. You can then cause it to re-attach magically.

    Method

The method is basically pure sleight of hand. The props you get are not gimmicked in any way, and the methods are pretty advanced. First, for 95% of the methods, you'll need to be wearing long sleeves (think Rocco or Carl Cloutier). For the 5% of the methods that don't need sleeves, you need a . . . ahem . . . thingie . . . attached to the inside of your coat that's made of "stretch" material. Think "cigarette vanisher."

So are the methods doable? Yes. You'll need a lot of practice, but they're doable for sure. Are they practical? Yes, if you have loose fitting long sleeves in your wardrobe and/or the aforementioned hook up. An item of this nature (a key chain) certainly seems like the type of thing that would be used in a more casual setting than a formal show. However, it might be fine for close up strolling. Those types of shows can be pretty casual.

Just keep in mind that typical sleeving techniques require that you're standing. However, if you're adept at lapping, you could easily adjust the handling for seated performances in a more casual setting.

The method is legit and doable and relatively practical. Basically, the majority of the handling is very much like a Spellbound handling with the added cleanliness afforded by sleeving.

    Ad Copy Integrity

Well, it does fall a little short on some levels. First it says, "Keep it with you at all times to perform jaw dropping visual magic at a moments [sic] notice." Well you can if you're wearing loose fitting long sleeves and/or you're wearing the previously mentioned hook up (i.e., P***). So it's not quite as anytime, anywhere as they're saying. It's close. Other than that, I'd say everything is accurate.

    Product Quality

The props are beautifully made and will last forever. However, the issues I have with product quality are beyond the props themselves. You get an 8 minute video that you stream from the Mechanic Industries website. It covers, very briefly, the handling, etc. And it's plenty to learn the methods. However, what's a little frustrating is the fact that the ad copy hints at "all the things you can do" with this prop, yet they don't teach you any other ideas.

I didn't dock the ad copy for this because the training video teaches you everything shown on the ad trailer. However, for the price of $35 plus the fact that they don't have the costs of a physical DVD, you'd think they'd be able to add a little bit of meat to the training video. I felt that was a bit of a disappointment for the price.

    Final Thoughts

The magic possible with this is visual and powerful looking and looks as good as the trailer shows. The methods are legitimate and doable (with a lot of practice), and the training is well done. The only negative is the fact that I feel you got a little short changed on the training video. For virtually no extra production costs, they could have easily added some more tips, tricks and ideas to use the prop for.

    Final Verdict:
4 Stars with a Stone Status of Gem.
