VIDEO CLIPS
Dan Hauss, the creator of Flow, has created an eerie card illusion that literally brings your magic to life.
|
In this effect the spectator is shown a queen of spades that can be thoroughly examined. She is asked to place her hand over the queen and imagine her going to sleep. When she removes her hand, seconds later, the queen is sleeping! The magician waves his hand over the deck and the queen begins to wake up from her sleep. This happens slowly and the spectator sees the eyes gradually open. At the end of the effect the spectator can keep the card as a souvenir.
Dan has also decided to include two effects with packs of gum, Rewrapped and Gum Through Wrapper. Both of these effects are visual, practical, easy to perform and have been in Hauss's working repertoire for years.

I was intrigued by this effect when I first saw the promo video. It is described as 'eerie', which fits-I think it's haunting as well. I always love card effects which have jokers, kings, queens, and jacks engaging in ;human behaviors'. What I love about 'Sleeping Queen', is that two minuscule details get altered-and can produce such startling responses from spectators. Dai Vernon and Jacob Daley treated playing cards like flowers; Vernon did make analogies between cards and human beings. To have a card 'fall asleep', to then be awoken, is bound to stick in spectator's minds for a long, long time.
The dvd has Hauss performing the effect to an audience-his main spectator being female-so, you get to see authentic responses from people. Very powerful trick. The in studio explanations, are very clear, and Hauss offers both sleight and non sleight versions. Very clear production values, and thorough handling reviews. The 'special something' that comes with this trick,
is easily gotten once you know what it is. I actually prefer a slightly different 'something', which I think is more effective than what I received.
Hauss includes two additional effects involving gum-which I bypassed not because of the tricks-but because I have an aversion to magic done with gum/packaging. Hauss also added in some shots of himself performing mime, which were novel, but had nothing to do with the effects.
Overall, this effect could be marketed for much less than it is. One 'special something' (about $3.00 after tax), and a simple manuscript, to me would have been enough. The major pluses of the dvd may very well be getting to see Hauss perform this before an impromptu audience. Same with the gum tricks, which likewise bring great responses from spectators.
I do recommend this effect to anyone who wants to perform something very unique and memorable. In the land of 'make believe', this is a very sweet piece of magic-romantic even.
