Minuette Aces

Paul Romhany

(Based on 1 review)
Paul Romhany is one of the busiest working magicians out there. Not only is he in demand with his innovative Charlie Chaplin Act, but he also works a lot of private functions and parties with his close-up magic. This routine comes direct from his close-up act AND his cruise ship show.

If you are looking for a beautiful piece of magical close-up theater then this is the routine for you. A well constructed and thought out Four Ace routine that offers some stunning visual effects. This updated DVD includes some new 'twists' Paul has added since the original release as well as the original Minuette Aces routine.

This visual Four Ace Routine that has been a feature of his close-up AND his stage act on cruise ships throughout his professional career. Sit down with a deck of cards and some aces as Paul teaches you step by step his wonderful Minuette Ace routine. It is NOT just another card trick but a visual transformation where the aces visually appear, vanish, change and reappear making this a highly dramatic piece of theatrical close-up magic.

Perform it as Paul does with a "music box" or as a speaking routine and you will have a professionally orchestrated routine that will become a feature of your own close-up show.

Please note that this routine will require practice but once you master this you will end up with something you will be proud to perform in every show.

Running Time Approximately 48min

First I want to say that after watching this DVD, I am surprised at the low cost. It could easily sell for another $10-15/USD!

The quality of the DVD is great. The only thing I found that might annoy some viewers is that the sound balance in the performance segments is normal, but in the teaching segments the sound only comes from the left speaker. The volume is nice and clear all across the board, so the imbalance did not bother me at all. Just for the record, adjusting the balance controls on my player and TV did not fix the problem.

The menu is very easy to navigate. I was surprised to see that there are two performance versions of this routine. Watching the trailer you would never know there is more than one version, and each is a little bit different from the other.

First you see a performance of each version all the way through. The teaching is broken down into phases - first you will see the phase performed, then Paul will explain it, and so on. I really like that feature!

The only gripe I had about the explanations was that there was a certain phase in one of the performances that was not explained (in this case, the Oscar Munoz handling of the McClintock Twist). That much I can forgive because he may not have had permission from Reed McClintock to teach it, and because the routine that it comes from readily available on DVD, which Paul mentions.

Since the main sections of both versions are essentially the same, each phase is explained just once, with all the handling variations and ideas for each phase contained within each section. It is clear that Paul has performed this routine for a long time and that it has been live-audience tested in various venues.

With the exception of a couple of the moves used in the routine(s), none of the moves in either version of the routine are really all that technically difficult. This routine will take time and practice to get it smooth, but the same goes for anything in magic that is worth performing. Everything is clearly and very well taught and the crediting is excellent. Paul gives verbal credits in each section and at the end of the DVD there is a short list of credits as well.

I will say again that across the board, the audio and video quality are very good and clear, and the volume is also very good.

I just want to insert an off-beat thought here: There are magicians out there that will tell you that they suck at dribbling cards (dribbling, not springing). It may be very easy and basic for some, but not for others. Well, if there was ever anything that would make you want to learn how to dribble cards, it is the opening appearance of the four Aces. It is not hard at all, but it is just one of those moves that just feels unexplainably fun to do, even just for the sake of doing it.

Anyway, if you like Paul Romhany and if you have ever used any of his other marketed material, you will definitely like this one. If you have never seen Paul Romhany or used any of his products, you are in for a treat!

I highly recommend this DVD to anyone that would like a beautiful, well-structured professional routine to add to their repertoire!
