This is a routine for the coin workers out there - it will challenge you, it will give you lots of things to think about and you will enjoy playing around with the different phases in this!
Allow me to clarify my use of the word 'challenge': It is not necessarily knuckle-busting but it is not easy either. If you are familiar with E.G. (a technique popularized by David Roth), then you will have a head start on this, but this takes it further.
Kainoa has long been known for his expansion of the E.G. technique and he uses it for many of his popular effects/routines with coins. This is just one more.
If you are familiar with his work and the title sounds familiar to you, it should; it is not a "new" effect per se, just the most up-to-date handling with all the hints and tips gained over the years of his earlier publication of this work, which was titled Ate Misbehavin.
This video is shot very well - the audio and video quality are superb and the menu is very user-friendly. You have the option of a Play All button, or watching chapter by chapter and there is also a direct chapter for what you need in order to perform the effect.
Kainoa explains the history and evolution of this routine and he is a very good teacher. He explains everything very clearly and the way the DVD is put together is in steps. The whole effect may only be a few phases long, but each part of the handling is broken down into some 20 different steps! The fade out to the screen titles for each and every step may annoy some, (Example: Step 1 - Production of a coin: [watch video of Step 1]; ...Fade out to title... Step 2: Vanishing a Coin; [watch video of Step 2} and so on...) but who cares? The teaching, consequently, is very thorough!
All of the steps make this routine easier to learn. As I said earlier, if you are already familiar with the E.G., then you will have a head start but you will still have to make adjustments to do this routine as taught, only because the E.G. grip is a tad deeper than one would use with the Roth technique. If you have never used E.G., get ready for some finger flinging learning! It will take time, but it will be time well-spent!
In order to perform the cleaner-looking version of this effect (which is the original version and the one that Kainoa prefers and uses), you will require something that many magicians have sitting in their drawer, and if you are into coin magic with more than just a passing interest, you already have this turtle gimmick. However, there is a second version that is taught for the purists that does not use the turtle gimmick. It does not look quite as clean, but it still looks very magical, but the tradeoff is that you need to do a little bit more work - still worth it and for the most part, the handling is not really that much different from the gaffed version.
Overall this is a solid product at a great price. If you love coin magic and/or are a fan of Kainoa Harbottle, get this because you will greatly enjoy it! This is not necessarily a video for beginners because although he does teach everything in detail, there are other things in coin magic that one should learn first before attempting to learn this.
