This trick is an exclusive from U.S. Toy Magic in Kansas City. I grew up in that shop. In fact, if it hadn't been for the folks at that shop, there's no way I'd be a magician today.
I was back over the holidays and the eccentric owner, my friend Philip Klein, gave me a copy of this to review. My review is in no way swayed by my history with the shop.
The effect is similar to the trick I learned as "Oscar". A deck of cards has the name of a popular movie written on the back of each card. A "Movie Collector's Club" prediction card is placed on the table. A helper (mostly freely) selects one card. The name on the back of the chosen card matches the prediction.
As a kicker, the deck is turned face down and the backs of all the cards now match the prediction card (a card-sized poster for the movie). Finally, the card box (previously Bicycle) now matches the Collector's Club prediction card.
I've been doing a version of this plot for years (not with movies). I have a method that I love, but doesn't have the kicker.
This version is really good. The method is relatively easy, requiring only one "move" which is sufficiently covered by the performance. The rest is pretty easy.
My only problem is the special feke that is included to remove some of the sleight of hand. It's going to take some work to get used to. In fact, I think I would rather just stick with sleights I already know and toss the feke. But for those of you that don't have the chops with cards, it's certainly going to make your life easier.
Strangely enough, my favorite part is the change of the card box. It's a little thing, but it's the little things that make a great performance. In this case, it's an obvious clue that the effect is over... a nice applause cue.
