Sometimes I get product for review that on the surface doesn't seem very interesting to me. I try to watch it, but I something always distracts me. For some reason, this DVD was one of those. However, It was one of the oldest items on my list so I had to get to it sooner rather than later. I was Running on Faith (Thank you Eric Clapton) in the hopes that it would be worth my time.

You know what they say, "Faith Proceedeth The Miracle." Never has the old adage been more true in a card trick than with this effect. Bich's effect is perfectly constructed, and a miracle to see performed. I love this construction. You show four blue-backed cards. Then you essentially flip them over to show that they're now red-backed (most people in the audience are thinking . . . double backed cards). Then you turn them over again to cleanly show four faces and the blue-backs are nowhere to be found.

It's as close to a sucker effect as you can get without being cheesy and insulting. The gimmicks are pretty easy to work with. After just a few seconds playing with them I was pretty much able to get the hang of using them. For $30 bucks you get all the (Mandolin Backs) cards you need, an instructional DVD and a small (4 pages) full color booklet. The price is good even though the DVD quality is pretty rocky by today's standards.

The DVD shows several excellent different handling ideas. They're all really good. However, the only complaint I have is that the best handling on the DVD (The Asher Twist Handling) is Performance Only. You have to spend another $11 bucks to buy that handling. That's it folks. This is one solid effect/method and product.

Final Verdict:
4.5 Stars with a Stone Status of GEM.

Mathieu Bich's BackTwist caught me off guard when I watched the performance. What I saw was four blue backed cards change into four red backed cards using the Vernon push-through flourish to accomplish what I thought was turning over double backers but when the red backs were turned over, they were a four aces. Quite a surprise!

In the package, Bich supplies the necessary gimmicked cards, a DVD with explanations of three of the four methods to perform the effect and written instructions for the easy method. As we all know, written instructions are a rarity today. The cards are well made from Mandolin Bicycle cards. This may or may not be a concern depending on your card taste.

BackTwist can be performed four different ways: easy, classic, flourish and the Asher Twist handling. The first three are well described on the DVD. The Asher Twist isn’t described but a link is provided to Lee Asher’s site where you can pay an additional $10.95 to learn it. For me, this seemed a little underhanded but not a huge concern as while this is the cleanest transformations, it isn’t the most visual. I found the classic to be the most visual and magical. The easy and flourish handlings were not to my taste. The multiple handlings are a great way to make the effect approachable by any level of magician.

Two caveats: First, The cards will wear out through performance but no instructions are provided to make replacements. Replacements can be purchased from Bich for $15.00. However, a “crafty” magician can make their own with a little thought and time. Second, since the cards are heavily gaffed, you need an exit strategy at the end of your performance as the cards are not examinable and may attract the grabby and curious.

Mathieu Bich has released another visual piece of magic that, with the different handlings, is well within the reach of all magicians.
