The Gecko is a utility device. Utility devices are tools and can be used to facilitate many different activities. When you go to Sears to buy a tool you know you're buying a hammer, screwdriver, or drill. You don't buy a "miracle wood working device" in an attractive box and then wait until you get home to see what it actually is.
That's how it should be in magic, too, but apparently the people behind The Gecko are afraid to spell out for you what it is that they're selling. This is a shame, because what they're selling is pretty nice, very versatile, and has a well-known track record for success.
Additionally, when they describe what you can accomplish with their mystery tool they are, to put it nicely, exaggerating. In the ad they say that The Gecko can make virtually anything vanish, that the possibilities are endless, and that you're limited only by your imagination. However, the people behind The Gecko know better because the first thing you see when opening the box is a piece of paper with WARNING in large type and a long list of items that you should not use with The Gecko. The list includes anything fragile, sharp, expensive, or of such personal value that making it disappear might enrage a spectator to the point of them causing you personal injury. (I'm not making this up, I swear.) The warning sheet also says that you should also not use The Gecko on anything you have not personally tested because the device's attachment system might damage it.
All this is a real shame, because The Gecko is actually pretty good. There's no need to hide the fact that what you're buying is an elastic pull, because it's a very good elastic pull, and the overall package is quite nice. You get two well-made pulls (with different strengths of elastic), a nice selection of extra and spare parts, and a 40 minute DVD that is very helpful in learning how to hook-up and use the device.
The DVD does have some annoying bits, such as the continuous cycling between gray, sepia, and color, the all-white flashes at the end of each color cycle, and the unintended but exceptionally annoying clanging sound in the background that occurs throughout. But this is mostly overshadowed by the detailed assembly and handling tips that are given. Yes, you will mostly likely have to re-assemble The Gecko to adjust the tension to your own jacket, body size, and handling preferences. You also get a single sheet of written instructions, which could benefit from an edit and spell check, but it's on the DVD where the most useful information is conveyed.
The Gecko isn't cheap, but it's thoughtfully put together and well-made. It's clear that the creators have put many hours into the product, and you'll benefit from their hard work. But you'll have to put in a lot of your own work in too. Like all good tools, learning how to best handle and use The Gecko will take some time. But there's a reason pulls have been around for ages, properly used they make good magic.
