Stone Cold Mental Vol. 1

"I really admire Jeff Stone's approach to mentalism. His effects are not only especially powerful, but also clear and undeniable. And his presentations [in Stone Cold Mental] provide strong theatrical themes, while leaving plenty of room for the reader to bring their own unique style. You're in for a real treat."
- Jay Sankey

"Stone Cold Mental has solid usable effects for stage and close up. I'll be using the effects, and I predict you will too."
- Joe Diamond

Stone Cold Mental
Volume I

In this series I'll share with you my personal collection of mentalism I've built up over the past decade and a half or so.

The 13 items to follow are just a small sample of what's to come. All of this material has never been published anywhere prior to this series.

In this first volume, you'll find ten effects in a few different categories, namely ESP, tarot, "time", bizarre, and "luck". Plus 3 bonus ideas including an effect specifically for magicians as well as a utility idea, and a fun presentational idea for your stand up/stage show.

Also included you'll find 8 QR Codes with links to video footage, a secret website, and a whole bunch of other stuff!

Step inside and join me on the journey to de-boring-ify your mentalism. Why be boring when you can be Stone Cold Mental!

Inevitability
A prediction is openly placed on the table. The spectator truly shuffles a packet of ESP cards then (without the mentalist ever touching the packet) deals them out on to the table stopping whenever they want. The prediction, of course, is correct. The spectator's choice is truly a free choice.

Extra Sensory Pendulum
The mentalist finds the spectator's thought of ESP card with a pendulum. Then the spectator finds the mentalist's thought of ESP card using a pendulum. The spectator truly has a free thought of ESP card. There is no force.

Torched Tarot
What follows is a very powerful moment of wonder. This will be a true connecting moment with your "spectator." The fact is, that this is more meant for a private one-on-one meeting with the spectator as a "sitter" and you as a "reader." This truly is very scary-powerful. Please, please, use it wisely and responsibly.

Nightmarot
The haruspex predicts a thought of tarot card in just about the creepiest way possible. Don't worry, no entrails or sacrificed animals were involved.

The Persistence of Time
One spectator reveals the merely thought of hour of another spectator.

Time Enough at Last
This effect is the same as the preceding effect. However, rather than drawings of clocks, actual watches are used, and the presentation is quite a bit different and has an overall different kind of vibe.

Hotel Hell
The key to the hotel room of a serial killer is shown to have a spiritual connection to the murderer causing a fireball to appear from nowhere, and other super creepy things.

The Purge
A voodoo doll wrapped in a cloth is seen to move. Then a pin appears in the voodoo doll at the exact place chosen by the spectator.

Bone Count
A spectator secretly chooses a number on a die. Another spectator chooses 1 of 6 facedown cards (i.e., one for each number on a die). The card chosen matches the number on the die. As a kicker, the other cards are shown to be completely blank. No equivoque.

LOST Lottery
The mental mind manipulator is able to hear the thoughts of the piqued participants as they think of some lottery numbers.130 pages2 ESP effects2 Tarot effects2 "Time" effects2 Bizarre effects2 "Luck" effects3 bonus items8 QR codes with to video footage, a secret website and more!

Overview

I would like to say when I read Stone Cold Mental V1 by Jeff Stone that I was pleasantly surprised, but I wasn’t. Saying that would be a lie, instead I was actually pleasantly astounded. Between the front and back covers are 126 pages of some of the unique takes on standard moves, premises and presentations I have read in a while. The concept behind SCM V1 is to “deborify” mentalism. Enclosed are various topics that intrigue most mentalists but they are rarely performed. The reason that is, because it is hard to find presentable routines that are not so far-fetched that it would be blatantly disingenuous or out of character for most performers to attempt them. Jeff Stone has straddled the line that separates the sensible from the ridiculous. Would I perform every routine presented here? No, I won’t because I don’t think my own acting skills are up to par but I definitely can extract several plots and moves from this interesting and engaging book.

Effect

There are thirteen effects presented in SCM V1. Ten of them are fully fleshed out including dialogue, moves, instructions on how to create the props if needed and additional thoughts. The last three are concepts for you to consider as Stone himself has not fully fleshed them out (as of this printing). Many of the presentational hooks are very clever and interesting. Stone has “modified” various old standards to make them not only more doable but to better camouflage the workings. In SCM V1, Jeff Stone brings forth routines and other offbeat concepts mentalists seem to grapple with.

Method

The methods used are standards used in the mentalism world but each with a bit of a twist. Well known items such as double envelopes, ESP cards, tarot cards, haunted keys, Okito Dolls, flash paper, candles, flap boxes, all have been used for decades. However, in SCM V1, Jeff Stone takes those old and sometimes worn concepts and turns them on their heads and brings new life to those tired tricks. There are too many to list here but one of my favorites is using non-working watches for the “magic age cards” principle (think Powerball 60 by Sanders and Abbott). Want to know how, buy the book.

Product Quality

In SCM V1, there is no wasted space. All 126 pages are packed with usable material and zero filler. With every routine, Stone provides to overall view of the effects followed by the workings. Included are the moves, dialogue, construction of props if needed, where to purchase materials if needed and additional thoughts. Also included for the lottery ticket prediction is a link to a lottery ticket generator where you can print out your own custom printed lottery tickets with whatever numbers and dates you wish. There is also a random function where it will print random tickets as well without any input from you. This alone, is worth the price of the entire book.

Ad Copy Integrity

If there is anyone concerned about ad copy integrity, it would be Jeff Stone. So no doubt the ad copy is as accurate as it can be.
