Overview

Maxwell’s Signature Opener is yet another amazingly mediocre magic effect from the pair of endomorphic magic creators The Other Brothers. As soon as you open the cheap black shipping envelope, your first reaction will be “I paid so much money for that?” You’ll want to kick yourself till it hurts but hey, don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Effect

The performer walks over to a table and offers to do a card trick for them. He removes a pencil from his pocket and blithely asks if anyone has a Sharpie on them because his pencil won’t write on the cards well. Of course, no one will and as they look around and respond, the performer’s pencil turned into a Sharpie. Hee, hee, the joke is on them. Oh boy!

Method

The method utilizes a “gimmicked” sharpie and a golf pencil. If you had purchased this or will purchase this, you will be ticked off that you didn’t expend 30 neurons trying to think this through yourself.

Product Quality

The Sharpie I received came “prepared” with the golf pencil in place. Of course, nothing comes fully workable from The Other Brothers so the ink nib was dried out, even though it was housed in its “air tight and water resistant” shipping tube. As a side note I stuck my shipping tube in a sink full of water to see if was as water resistant as a Rolex watch, it wasn’t. Surprisingly, the URL worked but when The Other Brothers products are distributed through Murphy’s the URL always works. The opening remarks from Maxwell (who the trick was named after) was several minutes of explaining he really wasn’t a magician and this really isn’t his opener and this is all some form of funny joke The Other Brothers schemed up (I’m not laughing Witkowsky). Maxwell then goes on to explain how to recharge your marker nib in case it dries out. Then the tutorial continues with the pair of bookends going over the routine and handlings on how to produce the marker or pencil and some silly pretenses on how to ring the gimmick in. While watching this torturous video I was thinking about other fun things I could have been doing like rolling back and forth on a bed of thumb tacks and following that with a bath of rubbing alcohol. As my eyes glazed over I began to wonder who would like to listen to this pair of knuckleheads with their sophomoric humor? I know who will, adult children living in their parents’ basement that switch off from learning magic and pretending to be Mario from Mario Kart.
