Haunted Bottle

Viking

(Based on 2 reviews)
A great close-up and parlor effect. "This enchanted wooden container is well over 500 years old", begins the performer. "It is said to contain the spirit of a Genii." The performer is able to make the bottle lay on its side, yet the spectator can not. The bottle sits upright at the performer's command. A great story complete with patter accompanies this beautifully hand-turned and ebonised bottle. The method is not your standard wire gimmick in the neck. This will fool those that have seen all the other versions. Long off the market but now made better than ever by the craftsmen at Viking Mfg.

Correction to Thomas Sciacca's review: the Genii Jug sold by Hank Lee is the identical product by Viking. As explained to me by a staffer at the shop, "that's just what we've always called it."

This is a good example of why I prefer to see props I consider buying, in person first. I'd seen it online-and was thrilled that the imp bottle had been given more serious treatment. Fits in perfectly with my vintage looking effects and props. The m.o. is quite fine, when handled correctly, and the bottle itself commands attention due to it's size and antique look. Plus, it's made by Viking. What I could not understand, is why the bottom of this prop looks like a poorly finished Spackle job. In other words, some part of the base had to be sealed, and was, with a putty of sorts. Rather than cleanly integrate the EDGE of the sealant with the rest of the bottle, an irregular edge can be seen. This edge telegraphs that there's something odd about the bottle, and it's not the imp who's renting it's interior. It looks like when you Spackle a hole in the wall, get lazy on the sanding/integration step-and then paint over it thinking noone's gonna see it anyway. For a prop this well designed, and by Viking, I was disappointed in this detail, which could be more cleanly and seamlessly rendered. That leaves the 'genni jug', put out by another manufacturer, sold by Hank Lee. Some effects I can overlook or adjust imperfections with. This however is a collector type piece, so, my pickiness steps up-especially since it can sell for more than 30 dollars.
