Overview

Backstab by Zak Mirzadeh is a “find a card” routine which is not only out of the ordinary by can be theatrical as well. The Card Stab plot is not new and there are various versions out there. Some have to use a paper bag which not only brings in another prop but conceals the action from the participants. Other methods require special knives or necessitate the forcing of one particular card. Backstab is not only done out in the open but allows the participant to choose just about any card.

Effect

A participant chooses a card from a fanned out deck held by the performer and the card can be signed if desired. The chosen card is then lost in the deck. Feigning messing up the trick, the performer readjusts and says he needs to memorize the deck and from there he can find the lost card. As the deck performer places the deck face down on a solid surface he asks what was the chosen card. The spectator names the card and the performer states that he remembers that card at the 14th position. He then takes out a knife and stabs the deck pulling up a block of cards. He counts the cards which where impaled by the knife….13 cards. He then recants “I said yours was the 14th” and proceeds to turn over the face down card left on the deck and it is the chosen card.

Method

The method uses two specially made gimmicked cards and the use of some basic sleight of hand. The gimmicked cards in all appearances appear to be regular cards but they are designed to maintain a block of cards, the number of which is your choice. Your block can be 14 as suggested or less. The only sleight of hand required is the ability to do a swing cut and maintain the block of cards as needed. The knife (which is not included) should be able to be stabbed into the deck with some moderate force without one slipping their hands off the knife body. A steak knife can also be used if it is handy.

Product Quality

You are provided with two gimmicks already made for use and some supplies to make more. The cards used will eventually get full of holes so the cards will be needing replacement. The gimmicks used to make the special cards do not wear out so the only consumable would be four cards every now and then. The cards provided can be left in the deck and used for any other card tricks. I personally would use jokers so they can be rung in and out as desired. The video tutorial is 1 hour and 16 minutes long and covers the basics through advanced routines. Also include is how to remake the gimmicks (if you can glue two cards together that is all you need to do). The pace, lighting, video and sound are all excellent. The instructional video is very well thought out and produced,

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is fairly accurate. The one minor misleading statement is “No blocks of cards”. Well….not a permanent block of cards but a temporary one at that which is why it would be best to use jokers so it would make sense if you want to remove them later on.
