Karl Hein is widely known to be an expert with a deck of cards. He has published some great DVD’s in the past and here you really get a look into his approach to magic and his depth of knowledge on the subject.

That Would Be a Freakin Miracle: Three cards are selected, they are lost in the deck and the rest of the deck turns into jokers. He gives some good tips on adding and changing this routine and improvising. He goes over a handful of hat loads as well, so that you can perform a card from either the magician’s or spectators hat, he also touched on a couple different hat loads.

Transformer Triumph: This is a flourishy version of triumph. A card is selected, lost in the deck and it is shuffled face up into face down. The card is found, the deck is sorted out to be all face down and it is revealed that the deck has been returned back to its original order. Here you are going to learn a handful of in the hands shuffles that retain the entire deck. I especially liked the Heinstein shuffle, this is an in the hands riffle shuffle that is completely false and fairly deceptive.

Pathways: Here he has 4 objects on the table, three items are selected and it is shown that he predicted exactly what the selections would be. This really fooled me, he has combined some classic mentalism principles with his Heiny 500 gimmick. He never completely explains how the gimmick works but you do see it and he gives you the references you need to create it yourself.

Heiny 500 Jam (Performance only): He shows a whole bunch of applications that all use

Give me 5: This is a fun gag where you produce a 5 dollar bill in the middle of a high five. This is based off of a classic move and you may find that you have played around with this concept before.

Out of your mind: This is Karl’s version of out of this world, where the spectator separates the face down red and black cards. There are some great upsides here it is unpublished, so this, for the moment, is an exclusive. It is completely impromptu and you use a small portion of the deck that makes it a lot more commercial than most of the classic handlings. The downsides here are that not all of the sleights used are completely original so he does not teach each part of the effect and it is definitely more advanced than Paul Curry’s original trick.

He spends a good 15 minutes fielding questions about restaurant work, his take on tips, openers and his approach. This was interesting and it is always nice to see another magicians thoughts.

Grandmother's BLT: This is a three phase sandwich effect using a King and Jack as the sandwich cards. The first phase is fairly classic, the selection appears in the sandwich. In the second phase the sandwich cards slide down the fan visually picking up the selection as they slide into the spectators hand. In the last phase the spectator goes to retrieve the selection and it turns into the sandwich cards in their fingers. I don’t love sandwich effects but to get that final effect I may have to start performing this.

So to sum it up you learn a couple good effects with a lot of Karl’s theory on performance. I appreciated his opinion a lot. In this lecture you have a lot less material covered then in some of the others put on by Murphy’s. The highlights for me were learning Heinstein’s Shuffle, the hat load and his ideas on restaurants.. He didn’t delve into all of the moves necessary to perform all of his effects so you will need some background knowledge or you will need to go make a few extra purchases to actually perform the magic covered.

This lecture has it all: Wit, charm, good, strong magic and a whole lot more!

Karl Hein is well-respected in the magic community and the material that he has released to the market has been very well received, and with very good reason! Karl is an excellent performer and a great thinker, but more than that, he is a very good teacher.

In this lecture you will learn a lot of really cool effects that can be played as flashy as you want or as straightforward as you want - any which way it is very strong material. It would be very hard to choose only two or three "best of the lecture" effects because they are all worthy of that description.

There is new material presented here and there are also some handling tips/hints/ideas/updates for his marketed items as well. He spends a good deal of time on the Heinstein Shuffle, which is only one of the best false shuffles I have ever seen and it is almost 100% angle proof (maybe about 99.9999%). The Heinstein Shuffle is also not easy to do and will take lots of practice, but it is worth it! There is a very good section on 'outs' that can play many different ways and is suitable for every venue/need - very versatile.

Karl touches on routining your magic, being creative, he teaches quite a number of useful sleights that you can use in your own work, some of them are easy and others will take practice but all of them are useful.

If you are a fan of Karl Hein (or even if you have never seen his work) you will enjoy this lecture. Mike Hankins does a great job of hosting and interacting with Karl and the audience and the whole thing was just very entertaining to watch as well as educational.

Very highly recommended!

Karl Hein's reputation for being an extremely talented and skilled card handler is well deserved. He is great teacher and an impressive performer. Time flies when you watch this two-hour video and you will immediately want to watch it again because there is so much material packed into this lecture. Hein admirably credits the magicians before him who have influenced his methods, taught him, and who originated various tricks that he borrowed or improved upon. Mike Hankins does an excellent job at hosting Hein and asking him to repeat certain moves or demonstrate various sleights.

The lecture starts off with a humorous mock-infomercial for the "Koppertop" hat, Hein's signature article of clothing. After Hein takes the stage, he immediately dives into his first card trick, the very strong, "That Would Be A Freaking Miracle" where the audience picks three cards, which are then shuffled back into the deck. The spectator then picks a card and it is not one of the three chosen cards, it is a joker. Then the joker finds the three cards, which almost instantly turn into three jokers. Then, as it that was not enough, the entire deck turns into jokers. Hein then locates the vanished three cards under the Koppertop, which is on his head. And, of course, then a bottle of water drops out of his hat. Hein clearly and articulately teaches the trick and the various sleights, forces, card palm and misdirection necessary to perform the trick, all of which can be used for various different routines. Hein's explanation of the card to hat load was very entertaining and detailed. The camera angles during the explanation portions of the lecture really help demonstrate and explain what the performer is doing. When needed, Hein calls for either a front camera, a bird's eye view camera, a worm's eye view or a side view.

Hein then demonstrates his impressive version of Triumph and explains it step by step, as well as the false shuffles and cuts, including the Heinstein Shuffle. The Heinstein Shuffle is an effective version of the Zarrow Shuffle, for which Hein acknowledges and calls for a round of applause for Herb Zarrow. He also demonstrates the false overhand shuffle and the Hofzinser cull. He demonstrates his card prowess by performing a one-handed full deck riffle shuffle followed immediately by two simultaneous one-handed riffle shuffles - -with half the deck in each hand.

Hein teaches a fun and easy multi-colored sugar packet prediction trick, using business cards and dollar bills to reveal the different color packets that he predicted that the spectator would and did choose. He demonstrates, but does not teach, his Heiny 500 multiple bill change which is extremely visual and leaves you wanting more, and strongly considering purchasing his instructional DVD by the same name.

Hein fields many questions and gives advice on working restaurants and explains his theory and philosophy of interacting with tables, collecting tips in different venues and handing out business cards. He also gives some tips on how to draw applause from an audience for a volunteer, which gets a quiet audience more involved in the act.

Hein also demonstrates and explains his version of "Out of This World" which he calls "Out of your Mind". Out of your Mind is an amazing variation on the classic trick that does not require a full deck or prior set up and plays very naturally. Hein teaches some handling that requires a bit of practice. He also demonstrates and explains his un-gimmicked version of Ryan Swigert's "Kickback" which he calls "My Grandmother's BLT" after his favorite sandwich (which his grandmother makes, which is very tasty). Hein breaks down every aspect of this and his other tricks. Practicing what was taught will no doubt up your game and improve your card handling skills.

This review does not and could not address everything in this fantastic lecture, which should not be passed over. You will thoroughly enjoy this download and no doubt watch it multiple times.
