This DVD, like Ryan Schlutz's earlier DVD "Miracles Without Moves", is like a slightly more complex addition to Big Blind Media's fabulous Self-Working Card Tricks videos.

While the effects here will require more practice to get right, there are no real knuckle-busting moves (very few moves at all). Mr. Schlutz's effects work prime rally on combinations of well established principles, or the slight twisting of classic principles. Such is the case with his GAP Principle -- a sneaky twist on the floating key card.

I really liked the effects here and have already added a couple to my set.

As usual, The BBM produced disk is well produced and executed. The cast of BBM characters remain the same (which is a good thing!). I feel like they are family members already!

I really liked this DVD and recommend it highly.

I love card effects that require no sleight of hand. I’ve learned as a working professional, that it’s great to have a few moveless effects in your back pocket for that occasional spectator that BURNS YOUR HANDS. I’ve also learned that some spectators can’t follow certain instructions of some self working card tricks because they don’t handle cards as well as we’d hope.

This DVD has some clever effects, but some of them might be a little too complicated for some laypeople to follow the instructions. That doesn’t make this useless for real world professionals. We should always strive for strong magic for those especially savvy spectators. Just don’t expect to be using these while strolling at a cocktail party. These effects require focus, and audience attention to both follow the instructions, and follow the effect. Even I had minor issues following some of the effects while watching.

To say Ryan’s performance style is minimal would be an understatement. In fact, almost every effect can be summed up as Ryan finding the selected card, and saying “Pretty cool, huh?” That’s fine for a DVD like this, because there is no performance style for beginners to copy, and it forces them to come up with their own compelling personalities.

My only real complaint is that the ad copy on the DVD states that if magicians are fooled by these tricks, that you can IMAGINE how fooled normal spectators will be. I hate this mindset because it’s WRONG. Laypeople have no reference to card tricks. They aren’t thinking, “Well, it’s not a force, it’s not a key card…” The trick with laypeople is to make them care, and give them clear instructions.

That aside, I know I will be using the GAP principle that is taught here. It’s a clever idea, that I know will have many uses. Just because it requires no moves, doesn’t mean it’s easy. You do have to be mentally aware and keeping track of what your audience is doing while you are giving them the clearest instructions you can.

If you collect methods, this is for you. If you work bars or loud restaurants, this is not for you. If you are in environments where you can give clear for attentive spectators regularly, this is definitely for you. The GAP Principle is worth the price of admission!

Random I-Tunes Song of The Moment: Still Loving You by The Scorpions

Effortless Effects by Ryan Schlutz Review:

Seven effects, one powerful principle and $30 bucks. Is it gem or is it rubble? Stay tuned to find out.

I think I might have a man crush on Ryan Schlutz. Don't tell my wife. The dude is smart, a thinker, and a magician's magician. He knows his stuff. He takes old principles that have been around forever, ones that you've even used, and disguises them so well that no layperson and most magicians will have no idea how the effect is done.

Of course, with this kind of magic, often the procedure is the weakness: the dealing; the counting; the this and the that. Not so with Mr. S. His effects have simplicity in method while still having brilliant deception in method. The effects are clean and allow you to focus on presentation. That's the best kind of magic there is if you're into entertaining your audience. Having said all that, let's examine the usual suspects and see where things lead:

  • Effect

  • Method

  • Ad Copy Integrity

  • Product Quality

Effect

Several impossible effects such as having the spectator shuffle the cards thoroughly followed by them grabbing a chunk of cards from the shuffled deck. They, then, merely think of one card which ends up face up in the deck or revealed in any way you'd like.

Method

Ryan Schlutz has coined/created the concept, The GAP Principle, which stands for Grab A Pile. This concept, obviously, has more depth to it than that, but it's this principle, which you will be taught well, that allows you to do impossible seeming miracles. Stuff that just cannot be traced back. The method(s) is/are so simple and within the reach of any performer. Further, unlike most magician foolers, this stuff also entertains and fools the lay folk as well.

S.O.L.I.D.!

Product Quality

It's Big Blind Media folks - home of the Were-beast that is Owen Packard. Of course it's top notch productions. Schlutz does a great job of explaining and teaching the concepts. Each effect is performed. Then it's taught/explained to either Liam Montier, James Went or Were-beast himself. Following each explanation, you're shown a quick overview/bullet point of each effect with Schlutz and the camera.

Also, many of the effects have extra bonus tips, tricks and ideas. Finally, there's a section covering The GAP Principle in depth.

Final Thoughts

If you're a card guy who needs to add some stuff to your repertoire that can be done with a completely shuffled deck and almost 100% hands off, then you MUST get this DVD. If you're a card guy at all, you'd do well to study this DVD. If you're not a card guy, then become a card guy and get this DVD.

Final Verdict:
5 Stars with a Stone Status of GEM!
